Edmund Ignatious Rice(1762-1844), Founder of the Christian
Brothers and the Presentation Brothers birthplace lies approx 1
mile North West of Callan. Ignatius Rice House retains many of
the artifacts of a late 18th century farmers home.
The hurling tradition in Callan
and the locality has a long history. They played in the Kilkenny
Senior Hurling Championship as early as 1889, just 5 years after
the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884.
